__Dan G. McCartney__ (PhD, Westminster Theological Seminary) is professor of New Testament interpretation at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas, Texas. He previously taught at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia for more than twenty years. The Good Book Stall

Amongst evangelicals, the Baker Exegetical Commentary series has received a warm welcome with the volumes produced thus far being of a high quality. The series is not aimed at the specialist, with greek words being transliterated. That said, there is a strong exegetical engagement with the text and the endnotes deal with issues of grammar and syntax. One imagines the books being of use to the preacher or student.  
This volume on James opens with 70 pages or so of introductory material considering the character, authorship , theology, structure and contextual issues. These are dealt with clearly, and are well laid out. McCartney favours the stance that the author is James, the brother of Jesus, and gives the letter an early date of 40AD. The letter, he suggests, is not a response or riposte to Paul but is a letter to the Diaspora, which contains 'God fearers'. The overriding theme is that of faith.  
The commentary proper is well considered, and a range of views on any given passage are discussed. McCartney provides an introductory summary to each section before a more sustained exegesis and endnotes which consider more technical issues.  
This is a good and thorough treatment of James' epistle, and has been well received. It is clearly laid out and well written and will be of benefit to students and preachers.
